Hawke's Bay Founders Winter Lunch 16th July 2017

Hawke's Bay Founders Winter Lunch 16th July 2017

The Cheval Rooms, in the grounds of Hastings Racecourse, was an ideal setting, on a sunny but cool July day, for 60 of our members attending our winter luncheon. President Paddy Bayley welcomed Janet Williams re-joining as an Associate member.  Janet first joined the Auckland Branch in 1973.

Following lunch, instead of a guest speaker,  members were treated to an hour of “mystery & romance” watching a silent movie titled “Under The Southern Cross”.  This movie was found by relations of our member Margaret Watt,  wife of NZ Founders Bulletin Editor Peter Watt.  Filmed in the 1920's,  it featured two of Margaret's ancestors. All the actors were amateurs, and with subtitles and appropriate music, this very intriguing story line held our members in suspense.  They responded often with comments when the villain showed his evil side.  Mainly set in Hawke's Bay,  it was very interesting to compare how this area looks today.  Members went away with a project on their minds,  finding out where the two homesteads featured in the film are located.

Comments following this afternoon have been extremely positive, so we would be delighted to show more of these unique family films, when they are available.
