Hawke's Bay Branch 2023 Essay Competition Winners Announced

Hawke’s Bay President Mrs Paddy Bayley recently announced the winning entries in the essay competition this Branch of the society has run at Hereworth School, Havelock North.

This is the fourth time Hereworth students have participated in this competition since 2017. The students in years 7 and 8 were invited to write an essay entitled ‘My Family – A new life in New Zealand’.  Participants were encouraged to research family records and discuss the new life in New Zealand with parents and relatives.

Seventeen essays were submitted as finalists.  A subcommittee of the Hawke’s Bay Branch were impressed by the high standard with very interesting family histories  presented.

This year the first prize went to Dean Winlove –  with two ‘Highly commended’ prizes awarded to Will Drysdale and George Foote. The winners were presented with their certificates and prizes at the school assembly on the last day of Term 2 by Mrs Kath La Rooy.  This very successful competition, held every two years, resulted from her suggestion in 2016.  We were also honoured to have NZ Founders Society Secretary Ms Carolyn Adams in attendance.

A donation for the Hereworth school library was made to Headmaster Mr T Barman.  The winning essay will be be sent to Knowledgebank Hawke's Bay to be digitized as part of Hawke's Bay history.
